During our personal training sessions and some of our classes at Universal Gym, we like to introduce different equipment in order to vary workouts. Take a look at this quick guide below to give you an idea of what equipment is beneficial to which body parts.

Battle Ropes

These heavy ropes add resistance to your workout, which in turn works several muscle areas in the body. Ropes can strengthen your arms, abs, shoulders and even legs.

The vigorous nature of battle rope exercises also get the heart pumping and can improve your aerobic endurance.

Kettle Bells

Kettle bells work on improving core strength, balance and co-ordination. With the right workout, they can have a positive impact on body strength and muscle tone.

A good kettle bell routine can build muscle in all the right places and can also aid weight loss.

Slam Balls and Medicine Balls

Slam and medicine balls vary in weights, so can add different benefits to your workout. They are versatile pieces of equipment that can be used on their own or alongside squats, lunges and sit-ups, for example.

The main difference between slam and medicine balls are the materials they are made of, but their benefits are similar.

Boxing Drills

Boxing gloves and pads provide a great workout for the upper body. Although boxing drills are thought to be a less aerobic activity, as with any exercise, you get out what you put in.

It is possible to use boxing techniques as a light exercise or a heavier physical activity to get the heart pumping. Punches can be combined with squats and other similar movements to work more than just the arm muscles.

Free weights and Cable Machines

Cable machines allow you to choose your weight from a stack and through a system of cables and pulleys, you can begin your workout. There are various types to work on several muscle groups.

Free weights can be used to exercise the same muscles as cable machines, but they are more versatile in that you can carry out a variety of moves with them. Both are good for muscle strength and definition.
